United 93
I saw United 93 on Sunday night. And I’m glad I did. It was riveting.
Yes, parts of it made me sad, as all Americans were on 9/11. But underneath that sadness came the usual anger at what the bloodthirsty terrorists had done to us.
The documentary style storytelling of what actually happened inside United 93 was unbelievably tense. And suspenseful. (Yes, suspenseful; though we already knew the outcome of the episode, my wife and I did not of course know what happened inside the plane, as Todd Beamer and other courageous passengers mounted their attack on the terrorist guards in order to get inside the cockpit.)
Writer/director/producer Paul Greengrass’s rendition from interviews with family members and friends of the deceased was absolutely remarkable. So was the whole perspective of that terrible day as seen through the eyes of various civilian air-controllers and the military command center.
At one point, late in the movie, the head air-controller in New York finally said, “Someone is at war with us and we are closing down all flights, domestic and international.” Got that completely right.
The idea that this was war and nothing but war, would of course, later surface in President Bush’s post 9/11 war time strategy. And many of the air controllers (both civilian and military) played themselves, another brilliant idea from Greengrass.
Should this movie have been made now? Is it too soon? Yes, to the first, and no to the second.
As David Beamer (who lost his heroic son Todd on United 93) wrote in the Wall Street Journal recently, this flick is a wake-up call. I wish it had been made earlier.
And the shots of the World Trade Center attacks, both up close and from the distant tower of the Newark air control center, reminded me of this: Why the hell haven’t the quarrelsome, dingbat New York and New Jersey politicians rebuilt those towers?
The Empire State Building was built in one year during the 1930’s.
We will never be whole as New Yorkers or as Americans until those towers are rebuilt.

I haven't been inside a movie theatre in years; but, I guess I'll go see this one.
I'm not really looking forward to it, but I feel like I owe it to someone.
The rabid lefties are calling it a "Fantasy."
Oops, Bernanke said "he really didn't mean it."
So much for that more "clear" communication, huh?
For those of you who think Bush has done so much for the security of this country, here's an interesting article entitled US Allowed Zarqawi to Escape .
Between this, Tora Bora (whether or not you believe bin Laden was present), and saying that he isn't really concerned about Osama, it looks like Bush has failed in the WOT too.
I bet if "Deadeye" Dick Cheney had been there he wouldn't have gotten away.
I go the movies about once or twice a year, and usually to something not of my choosing, but as an escort for a child.
This year I have two on my agenda - "Thank You For Smoking," and "United 93." Amazing that I can find two movies not involving Clooney, Moore, Streisand, Sarandon, Sheen, or any of the other loons that have hijacked Hollywood - when you have an opportunity like that, you go for it.
I wish he had been, rufus. I don't like Bush's administration one bit, but that doesn't mean I don't us to get Zarqawi and bin Laden "dead or alive".
Actually, I'd prefer alive. Humiliation rather than martydom would serve this country's interests better. Of course the flip side is that some poor U.S. slobs would probably end up kidnapped with a demand for a trade.
I want'em dead. DEAD! Once they're dead, nothing can go wrong.
America can't be whole until the vicious terrorists who planned and executed the attack are defeated. I have not seen the movie, but I hope it helps remind Americans of the will and patience needed to continue the global battle.
Kudlow-
Nice show open... "How much will the boycott damage the pro-immigration movement in Congress?"
Is that the same Congress that wanted to make every illegal immigrant a FELON the other week?
What the heck are you talking about?
Todd
LFC, it seems your article shows Bush really did try the diplomatic route before the invasion. He was sincere after all if you want to accept the word of an ex-CIA type.
Sharp, I never had any doubt that he craved approval, but that is very different than trying "the diplomatic route". You can't provide crap intelligence (mobile labs, aluminum tubes) and be "sincere" ... unless you are delusional. You can't throw U.N. inspectors out and then say you tried everything.
On an up note, we have a freshman Republican Senator actually trying to reduce pork, with some success. Good for him! They should toss Bill Frist out on his ass and replace him with this guy.
I don't know about his stance on other issues, but in terms of budget this is the brand of Republican I used to vote for. Maybe it will be a trend.
LFC, hindsight is 20/20, and the world accepted the intelligence. Everyone thought there were WMD.

If letting a major terrorist, who's killing Americans by the dozens, is Bush's idea of diplomacy, then we're in bigger trouble than i thought.
POP, the Republicans tried to take out the felony clause before the bill passed and were blocked by the Democrats. It would never get through conference. Beside, if it did , it would not be as tough as the law in Mexico.
It would have been nice to hear some of the technical advances. I know the energy spend big on R&D trying for that last drop from every well.
Ick, I thought that was before the invasion when we were trying diplomacy at the UN. Did anyone know he was going to lead a terrorist campaign after the invasion?
What is wrong with this Kudlow? Why is he rating and shouting on his show? Is something wrong?
What an idiot?
You don't shout at your viewers. You moron.
BOOM! BOOM! Moron.
I doubt even Dick "BFG" Cheney would've helped in Afghanistan. This comment thread over at Winds of Change has an excellent back-and-forth over the strategies vs the implementations available for actually fighting the WoT; start reading around #50, but the interesting bits start happening around #54 (which leads to the response to Tora Bora in #60).
sharp said... LFC, hindsight is 20/20, and the world accepted the intelligence
Not exactly. Most believed there were WMD's from prior programs, but that was existing stuff. The mobile labs and talk of a fully functional WMD and nuclear program were not widely accepted. In fact, many in our own intelligence agencies said it was B.S. They were ignored.
Lou Dobbs made an excellent point today on CNN, If the illegals and their supporters here in the US are so keen to demonstrate, why didn't they or why don't they take to the streets in Mexico and demonstrate about the corruption and incompetence of their own government. Maybe if they had the guts or the inclination to try to change their own country they wouldn't need to come to this country illegally.
Instead the Mexican people demonstrate against American companies in Mexico for taking advantage of poor Mexican workers. The same thing that the presence of illegal aliens here is allowing these same companies to do to unskilled US workers.
Lost in all the melee is the legal immigrants from countries other than Mexico. A guy from India (software engineer, ofcourse) said, it takes him 8 years to get a green card. I didn't realize it took that long to get a green card.
If you are illegal, we give you amnesty. If you followed the law, you wait 8 years to get a green card. Sounds like a Bush administration policy.
KTS, it is a bureaucracy problem that has been discussed here many times. The people claiming to think illegals should be given amnesty would have more credibility if they had columns on record criticizing the government for not fixing the legal system. I have written to Washington several times over the past several years. I read the average time to come here through the legal route was 9-10 years, but someone answered me the other day saying his friend's relative in Chile would have to wait 19 years. I can find no record of budget increases for the legal system. It has been going on longer than Bush has been in office.
UB, thank for the link. I like 50.

"Did anyone know he was going to lead a terrorist campaign after the invasion?" Did you really say that Sharp? He's a terrorist! That's what terrorists do.
Imagine if the Bill Clinton/BinLaden/Sudan defense was "did Clinton know Bin Laden was going to kill 3000 Americans?". I wonder what a search of Sharp's comments regarding that issue would turn up. Speaking of which, i'll ask again. Just how many years of not catching Bin Laden in a post 9/11 world does it take to trump not catching him in 8 years of a pre 9/11 world? When we didn't even know he was going to kill 3000 Americans.
Beyond that, this is old news. MSNBC reported it 3 years ago. The report then was that Bush held off on bombing the murderous bastard because he didn't want to lose one of his rationales for the war...that he was determined to start no matter what the facts were. The terrorist with a leg missing, treated at a Baghdad hospital, showing Saddam's in cahoots with Al Qaida blah blah blah.
You picked a real winner of a President, let me tell ya.
Dang, UB; That was a heck of a thread. I haven't even finished it, yet. What is your moniker over there?
Ick, I would expect MSNBC to take that view.
We were not bombing inside Iraq at the time, but I agree the CIA should have taken him out.
What is wrong with this Kudlow? Why is he rating and shouting on his show? Is something wrong?

KTS -- I found the Walmart same store sales being up 2% + as a sign that gas prices are not affecting the BOOM BOOM Economy as especially priceless.
What an embarassment.
Do you think if you asked Kudlow " what is the environmental impoact of drilling on the outer continental shelf ?' he would have an intelligent answer ? Probably not
Thought question: What are the symptoms of a country at the pinnacle of its power starting the slow decline into oblivion?
One answer, when we become reflective in our actions rather than pushing forward. Larry disappointedly made the statement "We will never be whole as New Yorkers or as Americans until those towers are rebuilt." Basking in symbolic gestures does not diminish the capability of radical Moslems to attack us.
Furthermore, Larry referred to this as a war that is 30 years old. I would advocate that the current war is simply an extension of a larger war that has been going on for nearly 1000 years. In 1453 Europe failed to support Constantinople and it fell. As a Moslem high water mark, in 1683 the Ottoman's besieged Vienna but were fortunately turned back. In the 1920s Turkey as a remnant of the Ottoman Empire carried out ethnic cleansing, which is apparently still occurring as expressed through their treatment of the Kurds. In 1974 they invaded Cyprus and are still hold up there. We also failed to support the Christians in Lebanon. Though much of the Balkans has been restored to western control, building structures in New York will not resolve the outstanding issues of Moslem expansion.
Saddam Regime Document CMPC-2003-016083 dated in 2001 contains a series of Top Secret memos that address the production of Nerve Gas Detectors which was prohibited by the United Nations resolutions concerning Iraq according to the document itself. The importance of the production of the Nerve Gas Detector is shown by the top secret letters exchange between the Presidential Office and the head of the Iraqi Military Industrialization Commission (M.I.C). This documents is yet another indication that Saddam Regime never stopped his WMD programs, and the nerve Gas Detector which some can see it a “defensive in nature” is not to be considered so when it comes to Saddam Regime, everything has an offensive and aggressive use.

Rufus, same moniker as over here. I was mostly a spectator on that thread.
srynas, I think there's some merit to Kudlow's desire to see the towers restored. The thing about terrorism and the fight against it is that symbolism is important, especially to the enemy. The WTC was not chosen as a target because taking the towers themselves out would cripple us militarily or economically; a strike on a nuclear plant could have done that. Rather, it was chosen as the symbol of what America stands for, at least in the eyes of al Qaeda.
We're often reminded that the WoT is not purely a military fight; we have to win "hearts and minds", and fight a media battle, and counteract enemy propaganda, etc. And the "battle of symbols", so to speak, is part of these auxillary struggles even if you think it seems trivial. It ties directly into the three aspects mentioned above, and quite frankly we need every win we can get in those arenas.
It might seem petty to you, but letting those towers remain destroyed is a concession to al Qaeda that they CAN permanently alter our landscape; that they can knock down, but we can't rebuild. Remember that the "other side" does not think like Americans; the Middle East, and Islam as well, is grounded in a "face" culture where allowing such a direct affront unanswered is a sign of weakness. You may believe the cost of rebuilding the towers outweighs the symbolic surrender or weakness which this portrays to the "hearts and minds" we're trying to impress; but wanting to rebuild is quite reasonable--and maybe even necessary--in relation to the larger WoT.

With the news web sites you cite on here, i find that statement hilarious.
We were not bombing inside Iraq at the time,
That's your defense? It was before the war started? We let a known terrorist, someone whom they were pointing to as a reason for invading Iraq, and we let him get away because of bad timing? Sharp, i'm trying awfully hard not to come out and say your statements are wholly idiotic, but you're not making it easy.
UNB -- your post as usual is completeley worthless.
Rebuilding of the towers has been the plan all along: the design and memorial to the victims has come into debate. You do nothing but "state the obvious" although your post as usual is exceptionally verbose. Nothing more than hyperbole.
Sharp, I don't think some of these people want to know about the Saddam regime documents that debunk all of their closely held beliefs. In a thread here there was even someone calling the "aluminum tubes" story a lie (just as the chem/ bio/ nuke WMD in Iraq/Syria is a "lie" I guess.)
The recovered documents are pretty clear about the tubes-- 50,000 of them to be exact:
1999, 2000 Iraqi memos: Procurement of 50000 Aluminum Tubes That Can Be Used For URANIUM ENRICHMENT.
This document CMPC-2004-004404
It's available to anyone not afraid to have the "conventional wisdom" blown out of the water.
Monkey said... It's available to anyone not afraid to have the "conventional wisdom" blown out of the water.
So is the analysis by the Atomic Energy Commission (you know, those pesky people who actually KNOW how to enrich uranium) that the tubes were not suitable for this purpose. Oops.
that's very interesting about beamer wishing it were made earlier...it's such a great film...greengrass deserves so many props for his tasteful film.
