Immigrants and their families at home are turning in terrorists and making the border safe - Is this not a very logical and believeable action on their part? Check out the stories via Google - enter the words terrorist mexico apprehension - There's an account there of a terrorist trying to recruit persons familiar with US truck routes with unhappy results - for him - So keep up the pressure - kill the golden goose - piss off the immigrants, their families at home, and everyone else down there who have created a border watch consisting of millions of Mexican eyes - some of which are very mean indeed - no amount of US Dollars can replicate this in-place border guard

Looks like Bernanke is a passive-aggressive type. What the f%#@?! He is nuts; he'd better cut the crap out. Who would leak this kind things to reporter(s)?! What happened to sending messages through the proper channels, i.e., issue a press release, give a speech, write an opinion/article, etc.? Bernanke is an idiot!

Maria Bartiromo should be investigated. Why she didn't report this before the market opened?!! The timing is very suspicious. A nasty piece of work!

Don Boudreaux has an interesting two articles at Cafe Hayek about how Paul Samuelson (and others) kept overestimating the GDP, and growth, of the USSR. It seems that when prices are fixed, as in a Socialist system, by non-market forces all statistics become meaningless.

First, read the two articles; then think about "China."

Bernard Lewis came to the New World in the nick of time. Fate--or, more appropriately, history--decreed his American journey and the direction it would take. The historian, who will turn 90 in a handful of days, had come to Princeton from London, at the age of 58, in 1974, to do the work of Orientalism which had gained him scholarly renown.

The article by Fouad Ajami is well worth reading at Opinion.com. This immigrant has made great contributions to our country as well as warning us early when OBL declared war against America.

BTW, as Bastiat, Hayek, or Mises would be happy to explain, if they were around, today; that, also, applies to interest rates.

Rufus, I'll borrow from that comment thread I cited in the previous post, where celebrim summarizes Powell's objections better than I could have:

"I’ve never ever seen the implication of the "Powell doctrine" be that we would have sufficient force to impose law and order. In fact, a more full statement of the Powell doctrine than the breezy one you quote would indicate that the Powell doctrine would be to avoid occupations entirely. Frankly, I’m somewhat mystified how any military observer would at this time be a fan of the Powell doctrine. The Powell doctrine was a disaster virtually every where it was applied – beginning with Powell’s command in Beirut and continuing right on to Gulf War I and Somalia.

The Powell doctrine was less of a military doctrine than it was a political approach to the challenges created by the damage done to the American spirit by the Vietnam War...

Essentially the Powell doctrine is only enter into wars which will be short, decisive, and popular. Superficially, there is nothing wrong with that, and there is nothing at all wrong with the above check list. But in practice, the Powell doctrine – whether Powell was in command or someone else was trying to implement it – could be shortened down to the statement, "Whenever you meet resistance, cut your losses and run." This resulted in a series of seemingly minor failures over the course of two decades which were little noticed in America, but served to give notice to our enemies that America was a paper tiger that lacked the will for a long or difficult fight. It’s that apparent weakness which in the words of our present enemies led to their decision to attack the United States."

I still think he could win the "political" fight if he would go on tv with a map of the border, and say, "We're going to build fences, here; and we're going to put another 3,000 agents, here; and we're going to put up this many UAV's over here, etc."

Then, in the same speech he could explain how he was going to go about making sure we have enough workers to pick the crops and build the houses, and do the other things we have to have done.

Once he's done this he could explain how we're going to help those already here get in line for green cards, and citizenship.

The American people are a "Fair" people, but they don't want to be insulted, or taken advantage of. They "really" want this deal to get worked out. But, they really want some grown-up "Leadership."

vi·sion·ar·y ( P ) Pronunciation Key (vzh-nr)
adj.

Having the nature of fantasies or dreams; illusory.
Existing in imagination only; imaginary.

Characterized by or given to apparitions, prophecies, or revelations.
Given to daydreams or reverie; dreamy.

Not practicable or realizable; utopian: visionary schemes for getting rich.
Tending to envision things in perfect but unrealistic form; idealistic.

Just a few points since I went to bed for a change. I think when they have signs saying racism, they alienate people. Not everyone who wants orderly, legal immigration is a racist or xenophobe. Then, the crops might not be picked for a while, but the needed houses would be built because Americans like those jobs, and the number of houses would be fewer because of need and the price of labor. There would be no bubble. I need say nothing of demonstrating on the wrong side of the border.

When they covered the groups supporting the strike, they did not mention Soros and his group. I watched Howard Dean look at the camera on CNN and lie by saying Bush has been against making them legal all along, and when challenged, he said Bush finally came over.

Carlos Slim is the one who owns the phone company too. That's part of the problem. America's drug war being fought south of us is a huge problem for all countries there. Friedman is right and O'Grady is right. It should stop.

"However," on the other hand; any President who invests as much "capital" as he did last year on long-term SS reform, ... [and a lot of other stuff]

Rufus, I will never share the view of GWB that you and Sharp have. I’ll admit at this point I have fallen into that not very pretty mode of enjoying it when new polls come out showing Bush’s popularity dropping. Not smart in one sense because he will be our president for the better part of three more years, and his lack of domestic support hurts any foreign policy initiatives this country needs to take. On the other hand, I am glad that his low poll ratings have slowed down what I consider his disastrous domestic policies.

We have gone over this territory a number of times before so I won’t reiterate the specific numbers in my usual diatribe against GWB. But I do get a certain catharsis in responding to your paeans to GWB insight and “vision”. Maybe it’s because he is such an easy target.

You are impressed by GWB’s “vision thing” and view it as a positive. You seem to view him as a man ahead of his time who sees things as they ought to be and tries to change them. I see George Bush’s “vision” in terms captured in the dictionary definition I posted above.

You see GWB as a relentless crusader because he took on SS reform. I see someone at the top of his popularity pandering to his base with a proposal that had no substance behind it, a man who throws out a concept with no data to support it, who offers an idea that will significantly aggravate the problem in the short run while providing no proof that it will help in the long run.

You believe GWB thinks in “generational” terms. I don’t think he has any concept of the long term effects of his actions. He runs on gut instinct and emotions not intellectual curiosity. The SS trust fund runs out in 2017, the Medicare “trust fund” ran out in 2004. If GW was thinking in “generational” terms, why didn’t he try to address Medicare which is many times the problem SS will ever be. Instead he added to the problem. If he had foregone the drug benefit alone, the money saved if applied to SS would have guaranteed the SS systems solvency for 75 years.

You see GW as a dedicated crusader fighting against overwhelming odds for truth, justice, and the American way. I view GW as a politician, up until recently a very successful one. That is, he was successful in the two things important to politicians, getting elected and passing legislation that assures enough monetary support will keep coming in to assure you and your party will continue to get elected.

You see him as a man who has pushed policies that have been good for business and will help everyone under the principle that “a rising tide raises all boats.” I see a man who had the drug and health care industry write the Medicare Bill, who had the credit card companies write the revisions to the bankruptcy laws, who had big oil write the energy bill, who’s tax policies favor the already affluent, and who’s only concern about the little guy is in some abstract “vision” that is divorced from anything he is actually familiar with.

You talk about his support of alternative fuels and that he doesn’t appear to be living entirely in the “present”. You have me there. I’ll admit he doesn’t appear to be living in the present, or for that matter, in any objective reality I can conceive of. However, I have to ask, if he has the vision thing, why wasn’t he channeling five years ago, identifying the current shortages and pushing the alternative energy card then?

You talk of GW and his “vision” of setting up a constitutional democracy in Iraq. I supported Bush initially on Iraq. It was a gut instinct thing. It seemed like the right thing to do given 9/ll, and it was also probably a common reaction against “old Europe” and the others fighting us in the UN. Emotional, “Us vs. Them. Bush’s presidency will probably be judged on how Iraq turns out. As I stated to Sharp, there is no point in arguing the pros and cons of the Iraq policy. It is what it is. Events have evolved there to the point that they will turn out there the way they are destined to, and in a practical and political sense there is little we can do to change that.

However, that being said, your characterization of the Bush Doctrine as something new is a bit much. The doctrine itself harkens back to Wilsonian idealism. It is a nice “vision”. Whether it plays out in reality remains to be seen, and based on fairly recent history, it is a problematic concept. I’m not saying he’s wrong but it’s definitely not a sure thing.

With regard to “No Child Left Behind”, it amazes me that a free-market capitalist like yourself can believe that doubling the size of a highly dysfunctional, inefficient, politicized bureaucracy like the Dept. of Education can possibly result in anything positive. It’s obvious you have bought into at least some of the “big-government Republicanism” arguments. This program is anathema to true conservatives, those who were proposing not to long ago that federal bureaucracies like DOE and DOC be closed down, those who see it as a growth in the federal government power to the detriment of federalism, those who support local control of schools, those who are against unfunded mandates.

You are right in indicating we will see results from the program some years down the road. Again we will have to wait and see. However, I will only point out that every thing isn’t black and white. It is very possible that we will improve math and science skills to levels similar to the “best and brightest” in Asia. They too depend on extensive testing throughout their education systems. However, many of these countries also admit that the emphasis on test scores may be a determining factor (or at least one of them) in why they lag the US in innovation and creative thinking.

You mention the “free-trade” agreements and view them as positive. There are a lot of people who are being hurt by free-trade agreements that wouldn’t agree with you. In a number of developing countries the agreements are being used as one rationale for the current movement to the left. Regardless, it seems obvious that globalization will continue.

In summary, you view the “decider” as decisive, a man of vision, a man who sticks to his guns. I view the same man as a politician, a panderer, and a visionary, with no clue as to how his “vision” will affect the future, disassociated from the views of typical Americans, and too arrogant and self-satisfied to find the flexibility to change.

It is unlikely you or I will change our views during the last few years of his presidency.

Also, once again thanks for providing the opportunity for me to vent

Yes sharp, You are right. It was the congressional mandate to use MTBE instead of Tetra ethyl lead in 1990. Now it has been found that MTBE is creeping into ground water and causing contamination. And finally everyone held the oil manufacturers responsible for the use of MTBE and filed an MTBE LITIGATION against the manufacturers. Their claim was that the company did not warn the people of the harmful effects of MTBE. What do you feel, was it the oil company or the government who has to warn the people? Was it the oil company or the government who had to safeguard the people?
Decide yourself.
And coming to rufus's comment - You are right. The law now says that the use of an oxygenate was not required. The oil companies removed the MTBE usage coz they didn’t want to be caught up in a MTBE LITIGATION again.
