Good for Mr. Bush
The President went right out there in today’s news conference touting the near five percent GDP report, as well as other strong indicators released earlier in the week. He also mentioned the 5.1 million jobs since August ’03.
Yesterday, Ben Bernanke reminded us that since June of ’03, real GDP has averaged 4 percent growth at an annual rate. Of course, lower tax rates on investment were put in place in mid 2003, so it’s no coincidence that GDP and jobs responded significantly to the strengthening of economic growth incentives.
The president also pushed for the extension of these very same tax rate incentives to keep the economy growing and to prolong the American economic boom, which remains the greatest story never told.
Bush repeated his veto threat for the overspending supplemental appropriations bill with its “Railroad to Nowhere” in Mississippi.
He told Congress to deregulate refining rules so we can produce more gasoline supplies. And he discouraged Congress from raising taxes on oil companies.
“Washington always wants to tax everything,” Bush said, and then went on to say what a lousy idea that is. This is exactly the kind of aggressive presidential communications strategy that needs to be made.
The economy is growing and Mr. Bush needs to keep talking about it.
Instead of blaming oil companies, Congress needs to deregulate energy markets to allow for greater investment and production of both renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
Good for Mr. Bush.

Seems everyone wants freedom from choice. Why should the government regulate fuel standards when people are free to choose a vehicle with better fuel efficiency? The companies are free to manufacture the vehicles people choose to buy. That is a reasonable system.
Refining capacity has been added even though a new refinery has not been built in 30 years. It is misleading to keep saying the industry has not invested in refineries. There have been multiple updgrades to meet mandate after mandate which reduced volume at the refineries, and our industry has met all deadlines while expanding capacity to supply the country's needs. It has also increased imports of refined products and built refineries offshore. Billions have been invested in our refineries.
He also mentioned the 5.1 million jobs since August ’03.
165,000 jobs per month over that time period. Big freakin' deal. Just another example of Bush living up to almost average and Larry touting him as the 2nd coming because of it.
Hell, even Jimmy Carter did better than 165,000 jobs per month. Perhaps Jimmy Carter's job creation is truly the greatest story never told, eh Larry?
By the way, if i'm not mistaken, i'm thinking Bush predicted a bit over 165,000 jobs per month over the same time period IF THEY DIDN'T GET THEIR TAX CUTS. We needed the tax cuts so we could double that number.
Frankly, it's rather embarrassing to see people, after predicting a low end of 180,000 per month and a high end of 300,000 per month now touting 165,000 per month as a huge success story. I think Larry really needs to develop a little pride.
Regulation and Capitalism are not mutually exclusive. Regulation can provide many public benefits and should be viewed as a normal cost of business. For example clean air and clean water are public benefits and are an entitlement. Businesses do not have a "right" to take low cost water and convert it to dirty water which someone else has to pay to clean-up before they can use. This is an example of a company transfering its product cost to society, in effect a hidden subsidy to the company. Is there excessive regulation, most likely, and I would agree that excessive regulation should be eliminated. However, based on capitalism, if a company cannot make it with reasonable regulation, you are out of business. Too bad so sad. Companies do not have a "right" to exist. And along that train of though we must eliminate subsidies that keep these companies "alive". Reasonable regulation provides a level playing field for companies to compete for the consumer dollar.
Well said srynas.
Show me someone who wants to do away with rules and regulations and i'll show you someone who feels little obligation to pay attention to ethics.

I'll admit I know very little about this whole ethanol debate; however there is an interesting article dated 4/27/06 by Ed Wallace on Business Week online. It's titled "Ethanol: A Tragedy in Three Parts." In it, Wallace kind of lays out the history of ethanol since 1974 and Project Independence; and then goes on to describe what he sees as the problems with ethanol.
How this ties in with GWB's call for stricter CAFE standards for auto's is that in the article Wallace indicates that the ethanol blend used in GM's E85 cars actually lowered fuel efficiency by as much as 25%. Per Wallace, USA reported that the Energy Dept. estimated the drop in mileage at 40%
Bush wants to give the auto companies 18 mos to meet the new CAFE atandards whatever they turn out to be. If he wants them to up mileage enough to offset the ethanol penalty and he gives them 18 mos, they might as well turn out the lights in Detroit right now.
If someone is more knowledgeable on this subject and I am missing something, let me know. Right now things just don't ad up for me. The article is at:
http://www.businessweek.com/autos/content/apr2006/bw20060427_493909.htm?campaign_id=search
or go to BusinesWeek.com and run a search for Ed Wallace.
Q, that's a good article. Most are biased one way or the other, and there is little rational discussion. Rufus knows about the mileage and the change in the engines required to increase efficiency. I question Cafe standards because they are met by reducing the weight of the vehicle rather than doing any serious change to the engine. I have read lighter vehicles are less safe, and I am not willing to trade off safety. I drive a small car now. If I remember correctly, cars did get better mileage when gasoline was higher in the 80's.
I remain unconvinced ethanol will ever replace more than 6-10% of the volume of gasoline or diesel. I had read another unreported fact is increase in the number of fires that occur while tanks are being filled. I agree with the author that any significant drop in the price of oil will devastate the ethanol industry again. Congress has mandated a certain amount be used, but that may be all that is ever used. I think that goes back to regulations. The members of congress are not competent to decide which fuel to use. It might mandate reduction of emissions or smog, but it should be left to the energy industry to decide the best way to do it. The industry has more knowledge and is less obligated to the lobbyists, and the ethanol lobby and agriculture lobby are as strong as any.
I was glad Bush mentioned diesel which seems a reasonable alternative. With the introduction of low sulfur diesel and biodiesel it becomes more attractive. Then coal-to-liquids may prove to be an addition to the gasoline market. In any case, the constant political chant of energy independence is irritating. How much did Brazil's government pay for the ethanol industry which still has price controls, and now natural gas is being used as much. Natural gas has always made sense for local fleets.
Show me someone who wants to do away with rules and regulations and i'll show you someone who feels little obligation to pay attention to ethics.---
This is not necessarily true. What is the old quote? Can good exist without freedom of choice or something like that? Rules and regulations maintain more order in society, but I am unconvinced one is more ethical because he follows a rule. One might be more ethical when doing the right thing without a government regulation.
For example, Seabrook's second question was simple: "How did America get off track?" Kennedy offered a windy two-minute attack/answer about George Bush and Karl Rove's "politics of fear," as well as darkness, division, and personal destruction, just to round it out
From Newsbusters on Kennedy-Larry, is this when you picked up your fear theme? I wondered about the logic of equating fear with disagreement with any issue. Fear is a health emotion in some situations, but I do not think it is always the cause of disapproval or disagreement.
One might be more ethical when doing the right thing without a government regulation.
I don't disagree, but that doesn't really contradict my point in any way.
I'm willing to bet that if you take 100 people who climbed their way up the corporate world by schmoozing the boss, secretly taking credit for someone else's work, fudging numbers to make themselves look better and performing a bit of a con job on the clientele, you'll have about 95 "free market, regulations be damned capitalists".
But if you have 100 people who climbed their way up the corporate ladder by coming in early every day, minding their own business, working hard and just doing their job and doing it well, so well that the bosses can't help but notice in spite of a lack of self promotion, you'll probably have 95 people who understand the need for regulations to keep corporations under control.
People like Larry fall into the former.
Mr. Kudlow,
And the rise in Chinese interest rates last Thursday?
But if you have 100 people who climbed their way up the corporate ladder by coming in early every day, minding their own business, working hard and just doing their job and doing it well, so well that the bosses can't help but notice in spite of a lack of self promotion, you'll probably have 95 people who understand the need for regulations to keep corporations under control.
Well heck, as long as we're making ridiculous generalizations and tilting at windmills, I'll give it a shot:
"If you have 100 people who climbed their way up the corporate ladder by coming in early every day, working hard, coming up with new innovations and streamlining business processes, creating new corporations or even entirely new industries, cutting waste and redundancies, etc etc etc... you'll probably have 95 people who want the government to stop putting up barriers to efficiency, stop over-regulating based on whatver the week's headlines happen to be, and generally stay the hell out of their way while they keep the American economy chugging ahead."
"But if you have 535 people who sit in a room, divorced from the everyday realities of the business world, sheltered from the cutthroat competition of international markets, unused to channeling entrepreneurship into revolutionary businesses, beholden to the TV cameras and the talking heads, who wouldn't survive 30 seconds in a boardroom but are fluent in the art of pandering... and you'll have about 95% who think they understand economics, who want to pass endless regulations in response to headline scandals and focus groups, and who believe they should be in control of all corporations."
Good job, UB. Let's all keep the rediculous generalizations coming.
Yes, UB and that pandering 95% will think everyone else is as useless and unprincipled as they are. They see great need for regulaton because they look in the mirror each day.
Whatever UB. As if "Liberals hate America" isn't a ridiculous generalization. Not that we hear that a dozen times a week in here or anything.
I was only pointing out that being against rules and regulations is not a far cry from being against ethics or fairness. I'm not quite sure what your mishmash was trying to point out. Though it would appear i may have struck a nerve with you.
Rush Limbaugh was arrested again. Let's regulate the drug industry to prevent them from selling anything to that self indulgent, out-of-control windbag. Now THAT'S effective regulation.
Funny, I don't remember saying "liberals hate America". And I'd certainly disagree with the sentiment, given a strictly classical definition of the word "liberal"; I view it as a great linguistical tragedy that the label, and the legacy it stood for, has been usurped by certain radical elements in the past few decades. (Now if you said "leftists hate America", we may have something worth discussing...)
I was only pointing out that being against rules and regulations is not a far cry from being against ethics or fairness.
And I was merely pointing out how ridiculous this generalization is. There are plenty of rules and regulations which are prima facie unfair and unethical; on the flip side, there are many situations where rules and regulations stifle creativity and innovation, and hurt the "honest, hard-working people" you claim are so enamored with regulations. Your generalization that people who oppose excessive regulations are lazy, or dishonest, or credit-stealers, is a rather sloppy form of poisoning the well and easy to make cut both ways.
If you sincerly think that capitalists want "no regulations at all", then you don't understand what the term means. No capitalist will argue for the abolition of all regulations; and many will acknowledge the need of governments to distribute the cost of negative externalities (which srynas tried to articulate, though poorly). Rules are not inherently good and ethical, and regulations are not panacea for whatever economic phenomena you happen dislike; the fact that free-marketers recognize this more than the regulators does not warrant your condemnation of capitalists.
I was just getting warmed-up. I was just having one of those impulsive reactions to Larry's rant of we need less and even less regulation to promote economic growth. Rightly or wrongly, I get the sense that Larry has a negative view concerning environmental regulations (which are easy to bash) and is missing some very important regulatory trends concerning economic growth. The irony is that we are actually experiencing ever greater regulation (copyright law, patent law, and land use law) that is soley designed to protect established companies from competition. I feel that we are evolving (downhill)out of capitalism into corporatism. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporatism)
See the entry for Larry's show of 3/23/06 which I thought was a really good (on tv) discussion.
The Unbeliever said...
Funny, I don't remember saying "liberals hate America".
No, what's funny is that it's said in here ad nauseum, but you choose to pick my "generalization" as the one to have a hissy fit over.
Your generalization that people who oppose excessive regulations are lazy, or dishonest, or credit-stealers, is a rather sloppy form of poisoning the well and easy to make cut both ways.
Not really sure how i said anything about lazy, but ok.
Let me make my point in a different way. Both Barry Bonds and Greg Maddux will probably stand up and claim that steroids in baseball is cheating. But if i had to guess which one is more likely to stand up and claim that actually banning steroids is "over regulating" the game of baseball, let's be serious. Nobody with a lick of sense would suggest Greg Maddux would be the more likely person to make that argument.
If you sincerly think that capitalists want "no regulations at all", then you don't understand what the term means.
I don't necessarily agree with that, but i'll let it stand. But i'll return the comment that nobody, liberal, leftist or whoever, wishes to regulate to the point of stifling or closing up business. At least not anybody i care to associate myself with.
Regulation should serve one of 3 purposes. Protect society from corporations (in matters of health and environment etc), protect corporations from society (i'm not totally against some sort of tort reform, though i'm against Bush's idea of it), and protect corporations from other corporations.
The trick is finding the right balance i suppose. But if we err, we should err on the side of society as opposed to erring on the side of profit. All too often the argument is made by free marketers to err on the side of profit.
I'd be interested in some examples of how regulation might stifle innovation and creativity as you claim.
Not a good idea for a third person to get involved when two other people are actively disagreeing, but you asked if there were any examples of how regulation could stifle creativity. In response I am providing the following.
“Circumventing Competition: The Perverse Consequences of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act” by Timothy B. Lee of the Cato Institute at http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=6025
Tim writes “The result has been a legal regime that reduces options and competition in how consumers enjoy media and entertainment. Today, the copyright industry is exerting increasing control over playback devices, cable media offerings, and even Internet streaming. Some firms have used the DMCA to thwart competition by preventing research and reverse engineering. Others have brought the weight of criminal sanctions to bear against critics, competitors, and researchers.”
Peruse the Electronic Frontier’s (EFF) Deep Links Page at http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/
You will see stories such as “The Season of Bad Laws, Part 3: Banning MP3 Streaming” the EFF writes “If the PERFORM Act becomes law, webcasters who use the statutory SoundExchange licenses to play music would have to give up MP3 streaming in favor of a DRM-restricted, proprietary formats that impose restrictions on any recordings made. So much for great time-shifting technologies like Streamripper and RadioLover.”
Please see this link http://www.commongroundcommonsense.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t51773.html concerning a case that the US Supreme Court has agreed to take. In this news report, ANDREW POLLACK of the New York Times wrote: “At issue is whether relationships between a substance in the human body and a disease — for example, the familiar association between high cholesterol and a higher risk of heart attacks — can be the basis of a patent, or whether such relationships are unpatentable natural phenomena.”
The list, sigh, is endless.
Fair enough. I guess what we now need to determine is whether or not the beneficiaries of the legislation, or proposed legislation, were or weren't free market capitalists up until the day they hit on an idea they wanted protected.
Mr.kudlow the economy is growing but it is coming at a cost. With higher twin deficits, and a rampaging debt load. It is like getting a raise, but you have your wife spending 10 times that amount. As an economist, you know our economy is cyclical. How long before we hit another recession, and all of the rampant spending comes back to haunt us?
I just ran accross an article that brings what I have been observing concerning corporate actions designed to frustrate new technologies and free market competion back into being on topic with Larry's world.
Back in March, Larry had an excellent discussion on the release of SlingBox. As I expected SlingBox has attracted the attention of Hollywood. Nate Anderson of ARSTecnica reported on April 27, 2006 that "Jim Goodmon, president of Capital Broadcasting, is surprised that Sling has not been sued out of business already. He claims that the issue does not involve recording but retransmission agreements, which Sling has not signed with anyone." ... "The Consumer Electronics Association is on Krikorian's side. The trade group argues that technologies like TiVo and the SlingBox are perfect examples of innovative devices that would never have made it to market if the companies first had to ask permission of the content owners. "Just like the Betamax and the iPod, the Slingbox and TiVo rely on fair use—the ability to use content for non-infringing purposes without the explicit permission of the copyright owner. If they had been required to go to the content industry to secure advance permission, it is highly unlikely that any of these products would have reached the marketplace," the CEA said in a statement."
